Aug 21, Sackets Harbor, NY

We moved the boat about 40 miles from Alex Bay, New York, west on the St Lawrence River, past Clayton and Cape Vincent out into Lake Ontario and then south to Sackets Harbor, NY. Bill and Owen moved the boat while Patty and Linda moved the car.

Weather today is overcast with almost no wind. Lake is flat calm. Makes for a beautiful run. We are staying at the Navy Point Marina in Sackets Harbor, New York.

Sackets Harbor had two skirmishes with the British during the war of 1812. One naval battle and one land battle. In both battles the Americans prevailed through lucky breaks each time. Local legend reports the following: In the land battle, the British landed their army west of town and advanced steadily toward the town. The townspeople retreated in disaray, then regrouped on the other side of the town and advanced against the British. The British thought reinforcements had arrived and withdrew.

In the naval battle The British sent a fleet to capture the American fleet and take the town. After an initial exchange of cannon fire, the Americans ashore had no more cannon balls and the British ships kept firing. One British cannon ball landed near an American cannon and was picked up to be shoot back. It was too small for the American cannon so the Americans put it in a blanket and put the whole thing in the cannon and fired it back at the British. The lucky shot dismasted the main British warship and the British fleet withdrew. Lucky both times. It is good to be lucky.
