Aug 12-13, Gananoque, ON

The Thousand Islands!

Heading out to the west from Brockville, we see the first of the
Thousand Islands.

We moved 35 miles west in the St Lawrence River through the Canadian small boat channel of the Thousand Islands today. Very beautiful country. The Thousand Islands are located just east of the eastern end of Lake Ontario in the middle of the St Lawrence Seaway and stretch eastward from Lake Ontario about 50 miles. They are mostly granite islands left here when the glaciers retreated a long time ago.

Interesting home from the 1800's near Brockville.

New home.

Cluster of cabins.

Nice cottage.

Many of the islands have homes. Some are small summer cabins and some are large estates.

New cabin on a very small granite island.
We think we see two trees.

Two of the islands have 'castles'. The first we see as we approach from the east toward the west is the Singer Castle on Dark Island. We stayed on this island overnight in 2008 and enjoyed cruising past the island again today. In 2008 it rained all day. Today was overcast but we got a clear view of the house and the grounds.

Singer Castle.

Statue of St Lawrence.

Thousand Islands Bridge linking USA and Canada.

There are two particularly nice homes with created waterfalls as we go under the big bridge connecting Canada and the USA.

Large home - a real showplace.

Another large home in the trees.

We have moved to the Canadian city of Gananoque, Ontario, (Gan-an-OCK-way) and are staying at the Gananoque Municipal Marina. Gananoque calls itself the Canadian gateway to the Thousand Islands.

Approaching Gananoque Marina.

Gananoque info center in the old RR station.

Downtown Gananoque.

There are several large stone churches in Gananoque. Here are two of the largest.

There are several cruise boats near the marina taking tourists to see the sights.

Gananoque Inn and Spa is a very nice spot. We ended up here for dinner. Good food and live entertainment.

Probably would stay at Gordon Marina next time as they are located next to the Thousand Islands Playhouse and very close to the Gananoque Inn.
