June 15, Alexandria, VA
Today we moved three miles to Alexandria, Virginia, where we are staying at the Alexandria City Docks right at the foot of King Street which is in the heart of 'Old Town'.
The marina is old with fixed docks, inadequate power and no internet, but from a tourist who wants to see the sights then this is just where we want to be. Lots of shops (store hours 11 am-7 pm) and more than 30 restaurants and quite a lot of preserved old buildings.
As we walked to dinner, we heard a street performer, James Turner, play the 'Glass Harp'.
He was very good and the sound was really beautiful. The 'glass harp' consisted of a large number of differently shaped glasses filled with varying amounts of water and when rubbed around the rim, produced a 'singing' sound. He played several complicated numbers and said Mozart had composed a number just for the 'glass harp' which he then proceeded to play for us. Highlight of our day. We think he should be on Oprah.
We really like Arlington and rate it a 'great stop'.
