Sept 11-13, Camden, ME

We left Castine about 11 am and motored in the mist and low fog to Camden, Maine which was about 20 miles southwest. Seas were flat and we took our time and while we could not see much we did really enjoy a typical Maine overcast and rainy day. We all wore heavy jackets on the fly bridge and had the heater going in the salon.

Camden is really beautiful as we enter from the water. Our marina is the Camden Town Docks which are right downtown Camden next to the waterfall and very close to all the shops and restaurants. Almost as soon as we dock we have our first visitors, Mike ad Suzie Luce from Stuart, who have a summer home in Lincolnville (about 2 miles north of Camden) and Noel Whipkey who is visiting from Stuart. We get caught up on their summer and they hear all about ours and we have a thoroughly nice visit. As they leave the boat Pierce and Judy Crompton, who are our near neighbors in Stuart arrive at the boat to welcome us to Camden. They also have a summer home nearby at Samoset, about 5 miles south of Camden. We have had a drizzling rain all afternoon and it lets up just enough for us to go to dinner close to the boat at Cappy's Chowder House. Their chowder is delicious.

The next day is clear and beautiful. We join Pierce and Judy Crompton at their home in Samoset and have lunch at the Samoset golf resort overlooking the golf course and ocean (this course is Maine's answer to Pebble Beach in California). Dave and Joyce Powell join us for lunch and then they leave for Northeast Harbor to reclaim their car and then head for Bar Harbor and plan to take a ferry to Nova Scotia the next morning. We walk the town of Camden in the afternoon and then return to Pierce and Judy's home for dinner. Our mutual friends, Dick and Molly Hoffman arrive to stay with Pierce and Judy for a few days and so the six of us have a fabulous dinner at the Crompton's with lobster, fresh corn on the cob and all the trimmings. What a treat.




Next day we see the rest of Camden. In the late afternoon, Mike and Suzie Luce come to get us and take us to their home in Lincolnville. Jeff and Pat Weber from Stuart are visiting Luce's for the weekend and we all get a tour of Luce's home on the hill with a grand panoramic view of the ocean all the way to Cadillac Mountain at Bar Harbor about 30 miles away. Mike has a new garage/workshop this year with an apartment above and a 1962 Buick Skylark convertible in the workshop to work on when he has the time. Dinner is at a restaurant in Lincolnville and back to the boat.






Our Camden Town Docks does not have power so we use the generator in the evening and at night pile on some extra blankets to keep warm. Night time temperature's are in the 40's. Linda thinks Camden is her favorite stop on the trip so far. Owen rates it right up there, too.
