June 18, Chestertown, MD.

Left Annapolis this morning on a warm and hazy day, down the Severn River and back into the Chesapeake Bay (almost no wind) and then north under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which links the western shore of Maryland with eastern shore.




We then turned east, up the Chester River, about 25 miles to Chestertown, an early settlement (1600's) based on growing tobacco (Chesterfield's?). The town even had a courthouse in 1697. Still very small, about 5000 people, there are some nice homes dating from the 1700's and gardens, a small commercial street, lots of trees and brick sidewalks. Washington College is here, founded in 1782 and endowed by George Washington in the amount of fifty guineas (valued at 88 pounds-approximately $200).
