July 13, Whitehall, NY

Today we moved north another 35 miles. We went under several more 17 foot bridges, including one that was draped and being painted. We went under each bridge very slowly and cleared by only a few inches each time.

Approaching a low bridge

Reminds us of the artist 'Christo' who uses fabric to cover objects.
Like the 'Brandenburg Gate' in Berlin and the 'Islands' in Miami.

We stopped at the town dock at Ft Edward and walked into the main street looking for some a/c supplies. No luck. Town is dying and we think we found a speed trap. Two cars pulled over on main street in the first 15 minutes we were there.

KOKOMO II at Ft Edwards.

Home built in 1777. Oldest in the area.

Downtown Ft Edwards.

We transited 4 more locks (being raised each time) reaching a total of 140 feet above sea level, and then started back down. We went through 3 more locks and are now at the level of Lake Champlain.

Fixer-upper for sale on the Champlain Canal.

Quiet waterway.

A freight train goes slowly by us along the canal.

Approaching another low bridge.
This has 17 feet of clearance and we have only 3-4 inches to spare.

Whitehall Marina where we stayed.

We ended the day at Whitehall Marina and RV Park in Whitehall, NY. Met the dock master who is a retired builder from Sarasota. He said he had a mortgage on the marina and is now the new owner. He was very accommodating and even took us to the hardware store looking for a/c parts. No luck. He was so helpful that we stayed at his marina. Turned out to be ok- but not the best. There was a restaurant here - now closed. Internet working - but spotty. Should have stayed at Lock 12 Marina across the waterway as they have strong wifi and a gourmet restaurant. We could not go out to dinner so we had talapia with Ako's special fresh fish sauce on the boat. Great dinner on a rainy evening.

Lock 12 Marina where we will stay next time because of their gourmet restaurant and wifi.

Lock 12 Marina and adjacent motel do not look like much from the outside but are reported to be very nice on the inside. The owner is also the chef and the food is reported to be excellent.
