Sept 23, Cedarville, MI

We awoke to find the whole area socked in by fog. We could see a mile or so and turned on the radar just in case the fog got heavier. We left Cockburn Island, Canada, about 8 am and motored west to Drummond Island, our landfall in the USA. The fog burned off by 9:30 and we got another beautiful day on the water. This is more Indian Summer weather. Temperatures in the 70's and almost no wind.

We need to clear customs so we tied up at Drummond Island Yacht Haven at 10:30 and phoned in to customs and they told us the procedure here is they always have to send someone from Sault Ste Marie (30 miles) to see us on the boat. So we had to wait for them to arrive. They have to drive to De Tour and take a ferry and then drive to the marina. Two uniformed officers finally appeared at 2:30 and boarded the boat and cleared us within a few minutes. This seems such a waste of resources. Maybe I am missing something.

We left Drummond Island at 2:45 and cruised by De Tour Village. De Tour Village marks the end of our trip west on the North Channel of the Georgian Bay. We have travelled 138 miles from Killarney. Pretty nice cruising. We found ourselves in the main shipping lanes along with a iron ore carrier who was coming out of Lake Superior and heading into Lake Huron and then Lake Michigan. We are on the same route. We gave him the Right-Of-Way because he is MUCH BIGGER.

We went out into Lake Huron and cruised west about 20 miles to the Les Cheneaux Islands where we are spending the night in the town of Cedarville, Michigan (on the upper peninsula) behind a good breakwater at the Cedarville Marina. Wind is blowing 20 mph tonight. We wonder about the weather tomorrow. Hoping Indian Summer will last a while longer.
