Sept 21, Little Current, ON

Today was a beautiful day. The front went through yesterday and it was a little cooler last night (40's) but today we have a clear sky, bright sunshine and a cool breeze of less than 5 mph out of the east. The temperature warmed up to the high 60's before noon. The water is just like glass. Perfect fall weather.

We motored about 10 miles west of Killarney into the ten mile long Baie Fine (pronounced "bay fin") fjord and went exploring. This is a narrow channel with 600 foot granite hills on both sides with the forest coming right down to the water. The water is generally 60 feet deep and is deep enough for big boats right up to the shore. We cruised right down to the "pond" at the end and found it lived up to it's reputation of being a really spectacular remote setting. It is said that during the summer season there are often 50 boats anchored in the "pond". There were no other boats there today. Francis Langford and Ralph Evinrude are said to have taken their yacht CHANTICLAIR from Jensen Beach, Florida to this Baie Fine many summers and spent a month or more down at the "pond". This is one of America's few fjords and is a feal beauty.

After leaving Baie fine we motored another 10 miles to Little Current and are staying at the Town Dock with 50 amp and very good internet. We are able to add pictures and complete the blog entries from as far back as Orillia. Little Current may be remote but it is a nice spot with all the facilities, nice dockage in town, grocery, drugstore, restaurants and large marinas to fix anything. Little Current is the gateway to Manitoulin Island, a very large island in the northern Georgian Bay. The cruising grounds between Manitoulin Island and the mainland of Canada are called the North Channel and that is where we will be cruising for the next 100 miles or so. There are many beautiful islands and anchorages here and a few small towns to explore.
