Sept 1, Stoney Lake, ON

We moved another ten miles north this morning through some spectacular scenery. The lakes are clear (and calm) and granite boulders can be seen all around, on the shore, as islands and are quite visable just below the surface outside the channel.

The shore has some private homes but is undeveloped for the most part, with the trees coming right down to the water's edge. There are a suprising number of granite islands here and many of the islands have a home peeking out from the trees. Some similarity here with the Thousand Island area of Lake Ontario.


There is a rock right out there, halfway to shore, underwater, called "the SPOILER". Glad we were not the ones to find it.

Beginnings of Stoney Lake.

We motored about five miles through Clear Lake and, instead of following the main channel we made a turn to the east into Stoney Lake (they don't call this Stony Lake for nothing - lots of granite boulders in this lake above and just below the surface). We followed the channel very slowly and carefully.

We are docking overnighting at the Viamede Resort. This is a smaller resort with a hotel, some cabins, pool, dining room and floating docks with 50 amp power and internet.

Stoney Lake is still part of the area known as the Kawartha's. This scenery in Stoney Lake reminds us of travelling in Maine around Boothbay Harbor but without having to dodge the lobster pots.
