June 5, Valleyfield, QC

Left Cornwall, Ontario, about 9 am with an overcast sky and temperatures still in the 50's overnight. We motored about thirty miles down the St Lawrence Seaway, through Lake St Francis, and enter the Canadian Province of Quebec. The sun comes out around noon as the sky begins to clear but the air is still cool. Shoreline is looking more populated as we get closer to Montreal.

The town of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, is our stop tonight. Known as Valleyfield for short, it is very French/Canadian. The people at the marina greeted us in French and when we responded in English they were very helpful and accommodating in English although it is obvious to us that they normally speak French in their everyday dealings here.







The town is nice sized and we can walk downtown from the marina. A big beautiful church and a college are located in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. All the signs are in French for all the public buildings and in all the stores. Store advertisements in the windows were in French. We went into a bookstore and it had only books printed in French for sale. Not much for us to shop for in the bookstore. Almost like being in Europe.

This is a nice stop and on a par with our nicer Canadian stops so far, Gananoque and Brockville. The weather is beginning to warm up. There are lots of young people here and it is a lively town as everyone is out and about as evening approaches. We went to a restaurant with an outdoor patio and everyone was speaking French. Noisy place and great people watching. We have Canadian Internet available here through the marina. We expect to head toward Montreal tomorrow.
