July 13-14, Guilford, CT

Left Milford about noon and motored into the Long Island Sound. Our visibility is much better on the way out than when we came into the harbor so we can see lots more today. There are nice homes everywhere we look and several yacht club type boat mooring areas full of all kinds of boats. The more we see of Milford, the more we like it, although it is a VERY small town.

We go east along the coast and then into the harbor at New Haven and find that it can acommodate large ships in the harbor. It has a deep entrance channel and we see one tanker unloading at a fuel depot. Downtown is not far from the harbor but we do not see any marinas for small boats in this area.

Linda has been watching a large column of smoke ashore from what must be a substantial fire but can find no news reports telling us what is happening. Owen thinks it may be just some dirty developer clearing land.

As we head out from New Haven, we meet a sailboat heading in. It has "red sails" up and is strikingly pretty. Not much other boating traffic today as it is friday. Probably more active tomorrow.

We cruise east through the Thimble Islands just a few hundred yards offshore of the Connecticut coast. These are a group of granite islands some of which have several very nice homes, some have only one home and some are small and uninhabited. We go VERY SLOWLY as we can see granite boulders above and below the water. We are enjoying seeing an area that is so unusual and we like seeing these homes close-up. Living in one of these homes would allow a wonderful lifestyle in the summer. Winter would be another story. These islands are only reachable by boat.

We move another few miles east and enter the little West River that leads to the Guilford Yacht Club. We enter near low tide and have skinny water (reading 3.8 - 4.0 on the depth finder) into the marina. Nice in the marina with new floating docks, a heated pool, clubhouse, barbeque area and loaner bicycles. There is an art show in Guilford this weekend (about 1/2 mile away) so we will go in on Saturday and see what the town has to offer.

We ride bicycles into Guilford and find a regional craft show on the "Green" in the center square of town. Lots of handmade jewlery, sculpture, pottery and clothing including many stylish one of a kind winter coats. Must be cold here in winter. Small town with some businesses around 1/3 of the "Green" and residential around the balance. Lots of trees.
