June 14, DeTour Village, MI

We moved about 35 miles east in calm waters past the northern end of Mackinac Island and then though Lake Huron from St Ignace to DeTour Village. DeTour Village is at the south end of the St Mary’s River which is the waterway that connects Lake Superior to the rest of the Great Lakes. This is the route that the large Great Lakes Freighters take as they head south from Sault Ste Marie to Lake Huron.

As we leave St Ignace, we see the ferry boats moving passengers without cars between St Ignace and Mackinac Island.

We docked about 2pm and found thunderstorms all around us (but none where we are) and saw our first large freighter pass by the marina. DeTour Village has a population of about 500.

We see our first Great Lakes freighter of the season heading south from Sault Ste. Marie.
