Aug 4, Warwick, RI
Irv and Betty Skeoch drive to Boston today to fly home to San Francisco and they dropped us in the center of Bristol in the morning as they drive out of town. We find Bristol is a nice town and visit a large home called Linden Place built in 1810 by a George DeWolf. As the sea was then the highway, the DeWolf family, along with the Brown's of Providence, (Brown University, Ivy League) made large amounts of money in Shipping, rum and slaving. Brown University has had a lot of controversy over this in the last few years. Home was Greek Revival style, four stories with a circular stair that had a clear center all the way up. This home was in the movie "Great Gatsby" and several scenes with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow were filmed here. Gatsby's large house in the movie was not this one. Gatsby's house was the Rosecliff House in Newport.
We walk back to the boat and enjoy the pretty New England clapboard homes with big trees shading the sidewalks.
The town looks prosperous and there is a large brick building south of downtown on the water waiting for a developer to find a new use that the community will find acceptable.
We finish touring Bristol and we motor about 5 miles west to Warwick, RI. We stay at the Brewer (they have lots of marinas in the NE) Greenwich Bay Marina in Warwick an await the arrival of Bethany Horner (Ken Horner's daughter) who is flying in to Providence to join us from Michigan by way of Florida where she has been at Kristy's in Tampa. It is hot again (over 90) and our power is 99-100 volts but we stay and do a few chores off the boat (laundry).
Bethany arrives with out a hitch about 5:30 and we are set for our next adventures. There is a fireworks celebration at the marina tonight for a 5 year old's birthday but we think it is really for our newest guest, Bethany Horner.
