Calvert Maratime Museum featuring the restored Drum Point Lighthouse, in Solomons

Kenny and Molly left us this noon in Solomons after we toured the Calvert Maritime Museum. Museum featured the fossils found in the nearby cliffs that are eroding (after hurricanes) and exposing lots of prehistoric sea creatures. Some live sea creatures and some local maritime history including exhibit on British invasion of Washington, DC, during the War of 1812. Beautiful Lighthouse from Drum Point moved to the museum site and recently refurbished. Kenny and Molly are flying back to Detroit and then both are headed to Molly's college Madonna University for orientation next week.
We decided to move north in the Chesapeake and we had a beautiful two and a half hour cruise to Oxford. Wave height in the bay was less than a foot and a beautiful clear day for a boat ride. Lots of big thunderheads around us but no rain for us all day.

Robert Morris Inn, built in 1710 by ships carpenters, in Oxford

Oxford is a small town which boasts a fine old hotel, the Robert Morris Inn. Linda wanted to go to the hotel dining room because the author James A Michener (who wrote the novel Chesapeake) wrote the crab cakes at this hotel were the best in the Chesapeake. Linda agrees - they still are. Charming dining room with wood paneling and low ceilings. The bar has fireplaces, captain's chairs and is cozy and dim. Michener is said to have written the outline for his novel in this hotel.

We saw some charming homes as we walked around the town. There is a working car and passenger ferry which carries two cars at a time. Some sort of ferry has been in operation, seasonally, since the 1700's. There are several boat yards here including Hinkley. Our marina, Oxford Yacht Agency, has about 10 boats at the docks and is a dealer for Grand Banks. Lots of pretty trawlers around. Nice here but very quiet.

Osprey's on their nest with new chicks. A common sight on the Intercoastal and in the Chesapeake this time of year.
